Millions of girls in Africa are already married when they themselves are still children.
But a pregnancy too early can destroy the life of these "child-women". These children are usually stillborn because these mothers are so young. Being in labor for days can often result in permanent injuries for the mothers. The result of all this is banishment from their society. Lonely, desperate and without a chance of healing they languish at the edge of their tribal societies. If they live in Ethiopia, their lives may be somewhat less miserable. The only hospital worldwide which has specialised in helping these young women is in Addis Abeba. The Australian gynecologist Dr. Catherine Hamline (79) and her since late husband have sucessfully operated on around 25.000 women in the last two decades. For her inspirational life's work, Catherine Hamline has been twice nominated as a candidat for the Nobel Peace Prize. |
