Nairobi: Soccer in the Slums
The kids of Nairobi's slums are crazy about football. They play soccer whenever and wherever they can - with anything that even remotely resembles a football. Boys and girls alike dream of becoming professional players, but they couldn't be further away from their dreams. These kids from the massive slums around the Kenyan capital play in matches that attract crowds of enthusiastic supporters, but most of the youngsters have to borrow jerseys. They play in stocking feet or barefoot. Sometimes two children will share one pair of shoes so that they have at least one foot with which to kick the ball properly, even when the ball is just a stone wrapped in plastic and rags. The kids from the slums are survivors, that's why they never give up on a game, no matter how small the chances that something will come of their footballing dream. The first talented Kenian girls team has an intensive training.
